How to wash an outer shell and restore its water repellency.

    Ninomad

Outer shells, such as Gore-Tex jackets and other waterproof breathable materials, are an essential item when you frequent the outdoors (and perhaps go winter sports). Regular maintenance ensures that they retain protective properties, such as waterproofing and breathability. In this blog, I explain how to properly wash an outer shell, how to restore its water repellency, and what to look out for when using special products such as technical detergent and DWR sprays.

Why do you need to maintain your Outer Shell?

Quite simply, a dirty jacket does not work as well. Dirt and body oils can reduce breathability and affect the water-repellent layer (DWR). Regular washing prevents dirt build-up and helps keep your jacket in top condition.

Repairing the DWR layer is also important. A jacket that absorbs water instead of repelling it is a lot less effective and often feels a lot heavier. Fortunately, there are products such as technical detergents and DWR sprays designed specifically for this purpose.

How often should you wash your Outer Shell?

In general, the following is recommended.

    • After intensive use: For example, after a multi-day trek or a week of skiing, especially if the jacket is dirty or smells strongly after an intense trip.

    • After about 10-12 wears: In daily use, such as in the rain or on hikes.

    • When water stops beading: If you notice that water is soaking into the fabric (you can test this by splashing some water on it with your hand) instead of rolling off, it's time for a wash and possibly a DWR repair treatment.

Step-by-step: how to wash an Outer Shell.

    1. Check the washing label

Every coat is different, so always check the laundry label and, if possible, read the manufacturer's instructions. Follow the recommended temperature, type of detergent and drying instructions.

    2. Use technical detergent

    • Avoid regular detergents, as they can damage the waterproof coating. Instead, use a technical detergent designed specifically for waterproof fabrics. Check out our comparison of technical detergents here.

    • Preparation: Close all zippers, Velcro straps and pockets to prevent damage.

    • Washing process:

      • Choose a mild wash cycle (such as synthetic or delicate wash) at up to 30 or 40 degrees Celsius.

      • Add the recommended technical detergent. Never use fabric softener!

      • Spin: Choose a low speed setting (e.g. 400-600 rpm) to avoid damaging the fabric.

    3. Drying: to dry or not to dry?

Drying your outer shell depends on the material and the manufacturer's recommendations. Always check the care label.

    • In the dryer: If allowed, use a low temperature (for example, a synthetic program) and a short cycle. This often helps to reactivate the DWR coating.

    • Air drying: If machine drying is not recommended, air hang the jacket in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight.

    • Ironing: If ironing is allowed, you can use a low-temperature iron

Restoring water repellency: when is a DWR Spray needed?

If you find that the outer layer is still absorbing water after washing, you can use a water-repellent spray. These sprays restore the DWR layer and allow water to bead off the fabric again. Check out our comparison of DWR sprays here.

How do you use a DWR Spray?

    • Make sure the jacket is clean and slightly damp.

    • Spray evenly over the outer fabric, paying extra attention to heavily loaded areas such as shoulders and sleeves.

    • Allow jacket to dry according to spray instructions. Heat activation (such as with a dryer or iron) may improve the effect.

    Tips for maintenance

    • Do not wash too often. Washing is good for maintenance, but washing too often can wear out the fabric unnecessarily.

    • Use an impregnating agent if necessary. Some technical detergents combine cleaning and impregnation, but a separate DWR spray may be more effective.

    • Store the jacket properly. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and damp storage areas.

    Conclusion

With proper care, your outer shell will stay waterproof and breathable longer. Using special technical detergent and a good DWR spray can make a world of difference. Just never forget to check your jacket's laundry label and follow the manufacturer's guidelines for best results.
