In my search for the perfect rain jacket that I can also use for skiing, ski touring and snowboarding, I have found the best partner in crime in the Arc'teryx Beta LT Jacket. Whether I'm walking on rainy hiking trails, doing a mountain climb or engaged in a backcountry ski trip, I take it everywhere with me because it provides such good all-weather protection. And good news: the jacket also has a men's version.

For hiking: My 'protection from the elements'

The jacket is made of GORE-TEX Pro material. This provides good weather protection. On several occasions I have been caught in heavy downpours and each time it has kept me dry and comfortable. The jacket is waterproof, but incredibly breathable despite that. During tough climbs, the Arc'teryx Beta LT allows me to get rid of my heat well. Waterproof and breathable: the best of both worlds.

Why this jacket is also a favorite for me has to do with its light weight. The women's version of the jacket weighs only about 345 grams. Ideal for when I want to travel light.

By now I have had the jacket for several years and it still looks great. Despite all the rough hikes along rock faces I've done, the material lasts a long time and the waterproofness remains good. That's also because I take care of it with the right detergents and sprays. You can also read more about that in my blogs.

For skiing: My partner in crime during climbs and descents

Not only during hefty hikes do I use the Arc'teryx Beta LT. Also during (backcountry) skiing, the jacket shows how strong and versatile it is. In the backcountry, the long trips uphill are long and tough. Every gram counts at that point! The fact that the jacket is so light makes a difference with every step you take. The breathability of the jacket is also crucial here, as climbing can be a pretty sweaty endeavor. Fortunately, the Arc'teryx Beta LT keeps me dry and comfortable. Even when it gets colder, such as from a strong, cutting wind, I am happy with the windproofness of the jacket.

What is also always important to me is that I can move comfortably in the clothing. That is not a problem in this jacket. The jacket's cut and flexibility allow for plenty of freedom of movement. And when the strong winds start to pick up at high altitude, I'm happy with the windproofness. The jacket protects me well as an outershell from the biting cold the wind can cause on the descent. Even in the middle of winter in cold Norway, the Arc'teryx Beta LT kept me dry and warm during a ski tour at -20 degrees. It is important to note that I always wear a layering system under my jacket. This keeps my body temperature well regulated.

Conclusion on the Arc'teryx Beta LT Jacket

For me, the Arc'teryx Beta LT Jacket (found here) is much more than “just” another jacket I put on my packing list; it is a reliable “friend” during my trips and adventures. Even the most extreme conditions I have experienced with challenging hikes or skiing, this jacket can handle it. The jacket may be a bit expensive, but it is a good and durable investment if you are often outdoors and seek adventures here as well. It is light but strong and can be used in multiple seasons. The men's version (available here) offers the same features.

Want to compare this outdoor jacket with other similar jackets. I compared six jackets that protect you from weather and wind. That way you can always find the best option for you! You can find the comparison here.
